Mario Di Maio Coining Press

The process of making coins and medallions is an exacting one. To ensure that each coin or medallion meets our standards, it is individually minted and goes through several quality control steps.

Our medallions are minted from 0.999 fine silver and proof quality bronze. They are handled with the utmost care through every process. Gloves are worn during all stages from production through packaging.

The first step is developing a concept and artwork. Once the art work is finished three dimensional designs are sculpted. For two dimensional designs a master is cut directly from the artwork.

coining die
Once the artwork and sculpt are completed the design is cut into a steel die block. The die is hardened to be able to withstand tons of pressure. After hardening it is then polished to a mirror surface, which gives the medallion the best finish possible. Once the die is polished it is ready to be struck. It is placed in the coining press and coined at pressures in excess of 150 tons. This results in the finished product.
